National Midwifery Week (Oct. 4 – 10) is an event created by American College of Nurse-Midwives to recognize midwives and celebrate midwife-led care. I thought this would be a great time to clear up some myths about midwives – from the education they receive to the services they provide.
Answer the following true or false questions and then continue reading to see how much you know about midwives:
- Midwives have no formal education.
- Midwives only focus on pregnancy and birth.
- Midwives offer pain relief to women during labor.
- Midwives attend births only at home.
Midwives have no formal education.
FALSE: Beaumont midwives have a master’s degree and have all passed a national certification exam.
Midwives only focus on pregnancy and birth.
FALSE: Our midwives are experts in caring for women during pregnancy and childbirth, but they do much more than that. They provide care for women during all stages of life, from teenage years through menopause and beyond. They provide annual health check ups, gynecologic care, and prescribe medications, including birth control and antibiotics. Beaumont midwives can also order diagnostic tests, such as ultrasounds.
Midwives offer pain relief to women during labor.
TRUE: Midwives are experts in coping with labor pain, including the use of an epidural or other medications for pain during labor. We provide women with all options for pain relief, including an IV, an epidural or relaxation techniques. They work with women to meet each individual’s need and make decisions about pain relief during labor if changes in the birth plan occur.
Midwives attend births only at home.
FALSE: Beaumont midwives attend births in the hospital. In fact, in the United States, about 95% percent of births attended by midwives took place in hospitals. Beaumont offers different labor and delivery settings to accommodate each individual birth plan, from natural birth to high risk delivery.
